Someone To Love, Someone To Hate

Well, the church bells they ring.

Calling masses to sing.

Come celebrate in the Lord;

Everybody is aboard.

But where are they when,

the lives of others depend?

I pose these questions of faith,

when acts of violence lay waste.

Catholics and Protestants they claim

that the other is to blame.

If Jesus is love, why are believers so enflamed?

Someone to love, someone to hate.

Tolerance is just a sign posted on a gate.

And it's high and separates

an elusive state of grace.

Satisfaction is bliss.

And the economy's a mess.

A trillion dollars we pay,

controlling countries that bray.

Who makes this choice?

Those who interpret God's voice!

Now the jews have their state.

And Palestinians must wait.

Bombs and the rockets they accuse,

their targets of abuse.

But who's right or wrong

won't be decided by bombs.

Someone to love, someone to hate.

Tolerance is just a sign posted on a gate.

And it's high and separates

an elusive state of grace.

Islamic radicals, they preach,

that you must die for your beliefs.

And if you take somebody down,

Allah gives to you a crown.

Well, kings who are dead,

can't feed their children

or read to them in bed.

I got a hunger for love.

And does it come from up above?

I'm not so sure that it's so.

But there's one thing I know.

A smile and an ear

can help the frightened

to see clear.

Someone to love, someone to hate.

Tolerance is just a sign posted on a gate.

And it's high and separates

an elusive state of grace.
